FREE, fascinating and fun goings-on in the Discovery Zone!
Especially for our younger visitors, there’s a host of things to see, explore and do in the Discovery Zone. Please visit the Discovery Zone HQ (marked “B” on the map).
Meet a Tree: Get up close and personal with some of the arboretum’s largest residents. Test your senses as you explore our woodland and meet the trees.
Lichen Hunting: Come and discover the miniature world of lichens. We will show you how to identify 9 common lichens that are indicators of air quality and you’ll also have the opportunity to take away an OPAL survey pack to do at home or in your local green space.
Mammal Mania: The Yorkshire Mammal Group will be displaying artefacts such as skulls, droppings, nests and footprints, which show a mammal’s presence. We’ll also be dissecting owl pellets to investigate the bird’s diet to illustrate the importance of mammals in food webs.
Explorienteering: Use the map to find your way along our lake-side trail. Keep your eyes open and see if you can spot our shy heron, or hunt for the mystical creatures in the Rootery. Just don’t get lost!
Pond Dipping: Explore life beneath the surface of the arboretum lake. Learn how to search for and identify the wide variety of creatures that live in the water. What do they eat? How do they move? How many will you catch?
Building with Oak: Learn the basics of green oak timber framing with a selection of timber joints to look at and assemble. Have a go at building a small oak frame using wooden mallets and pegs.
Look Down! What’s happening beneath your feet? Investigate how we use technology to measure the contribution of soils to climate change. |
